We Support Assessors to Better Support Communities

Property assessment is the foundation of fair taxation and strong communities.

That’s why we focus on advancing assessor expertise, advocating for the profession, and ensuring Albertans benefit from fair, transparent, and equitable property assessments.

About us.

The Alberta Assessors’ Association (AAA) has been the voice of property assessment professionals in Alberta for more than six decades.

Formed in January 1962 under the Societies Act of Alberta, the Association has continually evolved to meet the needs of its members and the communities they serve.

In March 1994, the profession achieved a significant milestone—registration under the Professional and Occupational Associations Registration Act (POARA) and governance under the Municipal Assessor Regulation (MAR). This recognized property assessment as a regulated profession in Alberta, reinforcing our role as trusted experts in delivering fair and equitable property assessments.

  • Providing strong educational opportunities remains at the heart of what we do. Over the next two years, AAA is committed to enhancing the quality, accessibility, and relevance of our educational offerings. This includes strengthening programming for our annual Fall Symposium, Pre-Conference, and Annual Conference, and ensuring content is developed and delivered well in advance for optimal engagement.

We’re modernizing our key educational resources, most notably the Practicing Assessment in Alberta Handbook (PAAH) Manuals and launching new courses, such as a mandatory Ethics course and a fully revamped Residential Assessment Course. A new Learning Management System (LMS) will allow members to access these programs online, on-demand, and at their own pace. AAA is also focused on expanding partnerships to co-deliver timely webinars, encouraging expert member contributions through articles, and crafting a long-term educational framework to guide learning pathways for both professionals and the public.

  • We’re focused on attracting and supporting a vibrant, diverse, and future-ready membership. This includes outreach to post-secondary students, like those at Lakeland College, through presentations and rebranded scholarship promotions designed to spark interest in the property assessment field.

Our recruitment strategy includes identifying assessors who are practicing but not yet members and encouraging them to join. Through compelling storytelling, targeted campaigns, and enhanced visibility, we aim to ensure the next generation of assessors sees AAA membership as an essential part of their professional journey.

  • AAA is committed to being a trusted voice and valued partner in conversations that shape the future of property assessment. We’re deepening our collaboration with key organizations such as the Rural Municipalities of Alberta (RMA), Alberta Municipalities (ABMunis), the Alberta Municipal Property Tax Association (AMPTA), and the Canadian Property Tax Association (CPTA).

Nationally, we’re working alongside the Institute of Municipal Assessors (IMA), the Saskatchewan Assessment Appraisers Association (SAAA), and other provincial organizations to co-host events, establish shared codes of conduct, and launch a mentorship program that supports professional growth across jurisdictions.

Our advocacy priorities include participating in government reviews of regulated assessment models and tax exemption policies, engaging directly with Alberta Municipal Affairs, and ensuring our principles are reflected in legislative outcomes. We’re also taking steps to align fully with the requirements of Alberta’s new Professional Governance Act.

  • Financial resiliency is critical to the long-term success of the Association. We are committed to managing our resources wisely, ensuring that key events like our conference and symposium are cost-neutral and reviewing office space needs to align with modern operational models, including a shift toward digitization and remote capabilities.

Our office space review will guide decisions about whether to lease, downsize, or transition to a digital-first infrastructure. At the same time, we’re digitizing physical records to reduce storage needs and increase accessibility ensuring AAA is both fiscally responsible and operationally agile.

  • We are modernizing our internal systems and governance processes to reflect best practices in transparency, accountability, and member service. This includes a full review of our bylaws and policies to ensure alignment with the Professional Governance Act, along with improvements to how we manage records and member interactions.

A key part of this effort is the implementation of Member365, an integrated member management platform that makes it easier for members to update profiles, track education credits, pay dues, and access services. These changes reflect our commitment to efficient, ethical, and mission-driven administration that serves both the public and our members with excellence.
