Complaints & Conduct.
Ensuring Accountability and Public Trust
The Alberta Assessors’ Association (AAA) upholds the integrity of the assessment profession through strong ethical standards and transparent governance. Our complaints process provides a fair and accessible way for the public to raise concerns about the professional conduct of regulated assessors.
By addressing complaints with diligence and impartiality, the AAA helps maintain confidence in Alberta’s property assessment system and ensures that all members continue to meet the highest standards of professionalism and public service.
Complaints on Professional Conduct
The Alberta Assessors’ Association (AAA) is committed to protecting the public and upholding the highest standards of professional and ethical practice among its regulated members.
If you believe a regulated assessor has acted unethically, unprofessionally, or failed to meet the Association’s Code of Ethics or Standards of Practice, you have the right to submit a complaint.
The Association’s complaint process follows the Professional Governance Act (PGA) and ensures that all concerns are reviewed fairly, thoroughly, and in the public interest.
Submitting a Complaint
Anyone can make a complaint if they have concerns about the conduct or competence of a regulated assessor.
Before submitting, please consider whether your concern relates to:
The professional behaviour or practice of an assessor (AAA can review these), or
A property assessment or tax matter (these must be directed to your municipality).
Please email the Association’s Registrar at registrar@albertaassessors.ca with details of the complaint. Anonymous complaints are generally not accepted unless clear supporting information is provided.
How the Process Works
Once your complaint is received:
Initial Review – The Registrar reviews your complaint to determine if it falls within the Association’s authority under the PGA.
Investigation – If accepted, an investigator may be appointed to gather information and review the matter.
Decision – The Registrar may dismiss the complaint, resolve it informally, or refer it to a Hearing Tribunal for a formal review.
Discipline Hearing – The Hearing Tribunal, which includes both assessors and public representatives, reviews the evidence and makes a decision.
Possible outcomes include a reprimand, suspension, conditions on practice, or in serious cases, cancellation of registration.
Members and complainants may have the right to appeal certain decisions as provided under the Professional Governance Act.
Our Commitment
The Alberta Assessors’ Association ensures all complaints are handled fairly, confidentially, and in accordance with the law. Our goal is to protect the public, maintain trust in the assessment profession, and support high professional standards across Alberta.
