Membership Categories
AAA offers five membership categories to reflect different stages of your career and professional involvement.

1. Accredited Membership (AMAA) – The Gold Standard
Our most distinguished designation, Accredited Membership recognizes individuals who have met rigorous education, experience, and examination requirements to earn the Accredited Municipal Assessor of Alberta (AMAA) designation.
2. Candidate Membership – On the Path to Accreditation
For individuals actively pursuing the education and experience required to earn the AMAA designation. Candidate Members work under the mentorship of an Accredited Member sponsor while building their professional skills and network.
3. Student Membership – Start Your Journey
For full-time or part-time post-secondary students interested in property assessment, valuation, or related fields. Student Membership is free and offers early access to AAA communications, events, and networking opportunities.
4. Associate Membership – For Industry Partners
For professionals whose work supports or intersects with property assessment—such as consultants, suppliers, tax agents, or educators—who are not pursuing accreditation. Associate Members enjoy access to AAA events, resources, and connections.
5. Retired Membership – Stay Connected After Practice
For former Accredited Members who have fully retired from active assessment practice but wish to remain engaged with the AAA community through communications, events, and optional volunteer roles.
The Path to Accreditation in 10 Steps
The AAA’s professional pathway helps you grow from a student or new entrant into a fully accredited professional:
Student Member (optional, while completing studies)
Candidate Member (gaining education and field experience under a sponsor)
Accredited Member (AMAA) (achieved after meeting all education, experience, and examination requirements)

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

Finish one of the approved education programs:
Lakeland College Business Administration Diploma (Appraisal & Assessment Major)
UBC Diploma in Urban Land Economics (DULE) – Assessment Specialization
UBC AMAA Fast Track Program (or approved equivalent)

Accumulate at least 48 months of relevant assessment practice (with at least 12 months as a Candidate Member in Alberta).

Complete the 40-hour AAA Tools for Practicing Assessment course and exam.

Prepare and submit UBC’s BUSI 499 Income Property Guided Case Study Course (Demonstration Appraisal Report).

The Registration Sub-Committee will review your demo report, along with the grader’s remarks, before you are eligible to request your Oral Exam.

Apply online through the AAA’s website and submit your Accredited Member Application Form with all supporting documents through AAA’s online portal.
Required documents:
Current résumé
Department Head Statement
Proof of education (transcript or diploma)
Two character references
Labour Mobility applicants: Letter of Good Standing + proof of designation

Attend the oral exam administered by AAA Examiners to demonstrate your knowledge, judgment, and professionalism.

Upon approval, pay the one-time accreditation fee and ensure your membership dues are current.

Once you earn the AMAA, keep it in good standing by completing 50 professional development credits every five years and renewing your AAA membership annually.
