When people think about professional designations, they often focus on the credential itself. What matters more is what that credential represents.
The Accredited Municipal Assessor of Alberta (AMAA) designation represents education, experience, professional judgment, ethical practice, and a commitment to ongoing learning. It reflects the high standards expected of property assessment professionals who help support fair, equitable, and transparent property assessment throughout Alberta.
Earning the designation requires significant dedication. Candidates must complete recognized education, specialized assessment training, professional experience requirements, and a comprehensive oral examination before becoming accredited. The credential is earned over years of study, practical application, and professional growth.
The commitment does not end once the designation is achieved. AMAA members must maintain their competence through continuing professional development and periodic recertification. This ongoing learning helps ensure assessment professionals remain current with legislation, valuation methodologies, and emerging issues affecting the profession.
Professional accountability is equally important. AMAA members are expected to uphold high standards of conduct established through legislation, the Alberta Assessors' Association's Code of Conduct, professional standards, and bylaws. These requirements help support public confidence in the competence, professionalism, and accountability of AMAA-accredited members.
Today, 302 professionals hold the AMAA designation. While that is a relatively small professional community, it reflects the high standards required to earn and maintain the credential. AMAA members share a commitment to professionalism, integrity, and continuous improvement in service to Albertans.
The designation is also unique in its scope. Under Alberta's Real Estate Act, qualified AMAA members may act as appraisers, and the designation is recognized through reciprocity arrangements with assessment organizations across Canada. These relationships reflect the credibility and professional standing of Alberta's assessment profession.
The profession is now entering an important new chapter as the Alberta Assessors' Association moves toward governance under Alberta's Professional Governance Act. This evolution further reinforces the importance of professional standards, accountability, and public trust.
I was honoured to receive my AMAA designation in 2014. More than a decade later, I continue to value not only the credential itself, but also the community of professionals behind it. Throughout my career, I have benefited from the knowledge, mentorship, and support of colleagues who share a commitment to serving the public interest.
The AMAA designation represents more than technical expertise. It represents a commitment to professionalism, accountability, and public service. For those who hold it, it is an accomplishment worth celebrating. For those pursuing it, it remains a worthwhile goal and an important investment in the future of our profession.
